The Physiotherapy department has had a long history of delivering skilled and effective physiotherapy health care to the active population of Canterbury. The practice has had over twenty years of experience in the specialised treatment of sports injuries as well as the "common garden variety" of strains and sprains. The highly qualified staff, using up to date methods, are committed to seeing the diagnosis, acute management and rehabilitation of musculoskeletal injuries through to a satisfatory resolution. The practice enjoys a professional association with several sporting bodies including Touch New Zealand and Canterbury Netball.
Registered Physiotherapists administer the services offered in this practice. All staff hold post-grad qualifications and have considerable experience in treating sports, spinal and musculo-skeletal injuries. The services offered within the practice are mainstream physiotherapy methods including Manual therapy, Post-Injury and Post-Surgical Rehabilitation, Electrotherapy, Exercise prescription, Education in injury recovery and prevention of as well as ACC contracted Activity Based Programmes. The services of this practice do not extend to treating respiratory, neurological, paediatric or women’s health problems. GYM Set up as a rehab gym for injury recovery it is also available to the paying public as a facility to improve strength and fitness. The gym is staffed by a qualified fitness instructor who works in consultation with the physio staff to provide a skilled and knowledgeable service for the gym users. ACUPUNCTURE Acupuncture may be used by some of the physiotherapists as a modality to address pain. However we do not give acupuncture using the philosophies of Traditional Chinese Medicine. For further information please enquire with your physiotherapist. MASSAGE A qualified massage therapist works Tuesday and Thursday afternoon, providing half hour and hour massages. She uses Sports Massage, Swedish and Deep Tissue techniques to aid in the recovery from injury and training soreness. REFERRALS If the management of the injury requires a review from a GP, the treating physio will refer you to your GP or may call in one of the Clinic’s doctors on your consent. The Physio staff of the practice are able to refer you to a radiology facility for plane X-rays and ultrasound scans. We can refer on to Specialists however we prefer the GP to undertake this process. ACC As an ACC provider, the physiotherapy department can initiate ACC claims without you having to see your doctor first. The fee for ACC related injuries are mostly covered by ACC however there is also a small co-payment. (See below for details) APPOINTMENT The consultations are on an appointment only basis. Please ensure you are on time for appointment and allow about 30 to 40 min for each appointment. It is usual for the initial visit to be a little longer to allow for an assessment and may extend to 45 minutes. CANCELLATIONS If the need arises to cancel a physio appointment, PLEASE phone in at least 24 hours before hand to do this. Doing this would greatly help us in the Physio practice, however we do acknowledge that this may not be always possible so we do ask you to notify us by phone as soon as possible. In the event of non-attendance with out reasonable notice a fee may be incurred. SECOND OPINION It is you right to seek a second opinion from any therapist of your choosing. CONSUMERS' RIGHTS 1 Respect You should always be treated with respect. This includes respect for your culture, values and beliefs, as well as your right to personal privacy. 2 Fair Treatment No one should discriminate against you, pressure you into something you do not want or take advantage of you in any way. 3 Dignity and Independence Services should support you to live a dignified, independent life. 4 Proper Standards You have the right to be treated with care and skill, and to receive services that reflect your needs. All those involved in your care should work together for you. 5 Communication You have the right to be listened to, understood and receive information in whatever way you need. When it is necessary and practicable an interpreter should be available. 6 Information You have the right to have your condition explained and be told what your choices are. This includes how long you may have to wait, an estimate of any costs and likely benefits and side effects. You can ask any questions to help you be fully informed. 7 It’s Your Decision It’s up to you to decide. You can say no or change your mind at any time. 8 Support You have the right to have someone with you to give you support in most circumstances. 9 Teaching and Research All these rights also apply when taking part in teaching and research. 10 Complaints It is OK to complain – your complaints help improve services. It must be easy for you to make a complaint, and it should not have an adverse effect on the way you are treated. This is and outline of the rights guaranteed by the law known as the Code of Health and Disability Services Consumers’ Rights. If you wish to enquire further, either ask at reception, the physiotherapist treating you or the Principal Physiotherapist (Greg Knight). PRIVACY All consultations and information recorded in your health records are confidential and held in accordance with the Privacy Act 1993. It is a policy of this practice that all staff complies with the Act. Patient information will not be passed on to any third party unless consent has been gained from the patient. This can be done at Physio reception. PODUCTS FOR HIRE & SALE If the injury requires the issuing of either crutches or a brace a hire fee will be charged. A variety of sport medicine products can be purchased from physio reception. These products include Sports Tape, Ice Packs and Massage Creams (anti-flamme etc). Enquire at Physio reception for more information on these products. YOUNG CHILDREN IN THE GYM Because of the risk of injury, we request that unattended children do not “play” in the gym. The treating Physio or the gym manager will supervise those patients under the age of 15 who are using the gym for rehabilitation purposes. Dr Brendan Kane also has considerable experience in sports and musculo-skeletal injuries management as well as general medicine. Medicals The doctors offer a variety of health screenings. These include full physicals, immigration medicals and medical assessments for work and sporting activities. Podiatry Ben Lamb and his team of podiatrists offer a comprehensive podiatric service including orthotics and surgical procedures for problems of the feet.
SERVICE
ACC cover all injuries, which have occurred as a result of an accident within New Zealand. This includes accidents at work, at home and on the sports fields. ACC covers all New Zealanders and visitors to the country as long as their injury occurred within New Zealand. ACC have the right to decline any claim if it doses not meet their criteria for acceptance. If this occurs, the treatment costs are past on to you, the patient. ACC does not cover the cost of any materials (tape, braces, etc.) used during your treatment.
