Glucosamine Sulphate (GS) has recently become popular as a supplement to aid in repair and regeneration of cartilage in joints with osteo or wear and tear arthritis. GS is available over the counter as a food product and is found naturally in food containing animal cartilage material such as gelatine and meat. Dollar pies and dog roll are probably excellent sources of this cartilage material that our own bodies can utilize to promote repair. When GS and the very similar chondroitin sulphate became available most doctors were skeptical, as they have seen arthritis remedies come and go. However some good double blind (neither the giver nor receiver know if theyre getting the active substance or a placebo), studies have shown excellent response with symptom relief for arthritis in joints especially in knees. Animal and some human studies have shown evidence of actual cartilage regeneration, which is very exciting. Most involved taking GS for at least 6 weeks and at least a gram a day. No side effects were noted and none would seem likely. It is not clear how long GS should be taken but it seems reasonable to continue, perhaps at a smaller dose; if there is a clear response in the first 6 weeks. Studies have mostly looked at the knee but it would seem likely to help all the joints although the discs in the spine are of different structure and may not be helped.
GS is probably worth a trial if you have mild arthritis, especially of the knee, common in those who have had cartilage surgery.

Response to GS can only be measured by how you feel and arthritis may vary a lot from week to week, sometimes making it hard to evaluate response. Oral anti-flammatories like Voltaren can also be taken with GS. Glucosamine Sulphate is not quite a proven treatment but looks promising and is unlikely to be harmful, give it a go or discuss with your doctor.
